Sheffield Wednesday last night made their first major signing of the summer with the capture of goalkeeper Keiren Westwood.
The 29-year-old goalkeeper - out of contract at Sunderland - has signed a two-year deal at Hillsborough to become Stuart Gray’s first major summer signing.
The Republic of Ireland international has made almost 300 career appearances, and numbers Carlisle United and Coventry City as previous clubs.
His arrival casts doubt over the future of last season’s No 1 Chris Kirkland, the former England goalkeeper is out of contract although talks are stll ongoing about thrashing out a new deal.
Gray expects to make several new signings in the coming week, with Chelsea’s Sam Hutchinson also on his wanted list.
Owls fans will be hoping Westwood’s arrival - and the release of major funds - is an indication that incoming owner Hafiz Mammadov’s takeover is imminent, with the Hillsborough club waiting on the Football League for ratification of the deal.
