Sheffield Wednesday 2 Hartlepool United 2: Sweeney shocks Owls with equaliser

Sheffield Wednesday tossed away two points after Antony Sweeney’s 87th-minute equaliser saw Hartlepool snatch a point at Hillsborough.

Winger Ben Marshall’s return to Stoke City created a vacancy in the Owls midfield. In came defender Lewis Buxton after recovering from injury.

Chris O’Grady should have put the Owls in front after just three minutes, but after a clever turn, fired his shot low across goal.

Mike Jones was thwarted by Pools goalkeeper Scott Flinders, but the game was being played with a swirling wind which affected the quality of play.

But Hartlepool took a shock lead straight after the restart, Peter Hartley heading home from a corner.

Substitute Jermaine Johnson - on for left-back Reda Johnson - replied for Wednesday 10 minutes later. A storming run down the right before firing inside Flinder’s right-hand post.

Gary Madine put Wednesday in front with 15 minutes remaining after a goalmouth scramble.

Antony Sweeney equalised with three minutes remaining, catching goalkeeper Nicky Weaver off his line on a rare attack.
