Gary Madine returned up front to partner Chris O’Grady, but in a match of few chances Wednesday only looked likely to score from a set piece.

They had a massive escape in the closing minutes when Rob Jones gave away a penalty, but Rochdale captain Gary Jones hit the post with his spot-kick.

At the other end Ryan Lowe was furious the Owls were not handed their own penalty when he was manhandled in the box.

New Owls boss Dave Jones watched the game from the directors’ box, alongside his new chairman Milan Mandaric.
