Transfer gossip (Friday, June 24): Boro and Leeds United fight for Euro 16 star

MIDDLESBROUGH and Leeds United are fighting to make a cut-price signing for one of the Welsh stars of Euro 2016.

But they face a fight with Swansea City and Aston Villa to secure the services of defender Chris Gunter, who has played every minute for Wales at Euro 2016 and performed a key role in helping them top Group B ahead of England, Slovakia and Russia.

The 26-year-old full-back has a release clause in his contract with Reading, which has two more years to run, and is available for £1m.

Gunter has 70 caps for Wales and made 166 appearances during his four-year stay with the Royals, scoring twice.

Hull City chief Steve Bruce has his eyes on Old Trafford if new Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho decides that Phil Jones is surplus to requirements.

Jones, 24, has been blighted by injuries over the last 12 months but Bruce is aware of the defender’s qualities.

Hull have slapped a £12m price tag on Scotland left-back Andy Robertson, who is interesting Liverpool.

Bruce wants to bring back Robbie Brady from relegated Norwich before he will consider selling Robertson, 22, who joined from Dundee United for £3m ftwo years ago.

Barnsley are poised to make a new move for Plymouth Argyle defender Curtis Nelson, 23, who is out of contract at Home Park at the end of the month, but has been offered a new deal.

Huddersfield Town and promoted Wigan Athletic are interested in signing out-of-contract Nottingham Forest and former Celtic defender Kelvin Wilson.

The 30-year-old centre-back has accumulated over 350 career appearances and won the Scottish Premier League title twice.

A £3m price tag is double the fee Leeds are willing to offer Oxford United for 23-year-old striker Kemar Roofe, who scored 26 goals last season in helping Oxford to promotion in League 2.

Defensive duo Kirk Broadfoot, 31, and Stephen Kelly, 32, have agreed new two-year deals with Rotherham United.

Sheffield Wednesday face a fight to sign Czech left-back Daniel Pudil, 30, on a permanent deal from Watford.

The left-back made 42 appearances last term under head coach Carlos Carvalhal as the Owls reached the Championship play-off final.
