Transfer gossip (Sunday, Aug 14): Geordies eye Sheffield Wednesday and Huddersfield Town strikers | Leeds United close in | Sheffield United want Owls man | Boro go for Everton defender | Hull City star target

NEWCASTLE United are eyeing both Sheffield Wednesday's Fernando Forestieri and Huddersfield Town's Nahki Wells.

Former Italy Under-21 Forestieri refused to travel with the Owls to Norwich after a £6m-plus bid from Derby County had been rejected while Wells netted against the Geordies in Town’s tremendous 2-1 Championship victory on Saturday.

Either player would cost relegated Newcastle around £8m even though neither club want to or is under pressure to sell.

Derby remain firmly interested in 26-year-old Forestieri – and would easily top his Hillsborough salary – despite Owls coach Carlos Carvalhal saying: “The chairman doesn’t want to sell any player. That’s what he has told me. I can’t tell you more than this. Fernando has a contract for three years. He belongs to us. We don’t want to sell any player.”

Bermuda international Wells returned to action from knee injury for Huddersfield in front of a 50,000 crowd at St James’ Park and said: “I couldn’t ask for any more, to be selected and to be able to score in a match like this was fantastic.

“We got a fantastic result against a big club. It was a massive upset and that’s what we came here for. It’s a dream to be playing at places like this from where I have come from.”

Newcastle also face competition from Middlesbrough, who have made a late move to sign left-back Brendan Galloway from Everton on loan for the season.

Another Owls striker is also wanted.. by Sheffield United.

Wolves, Leeds, Newcastle and QPR are said to be monitoring the 22-year-old’s situation but Barnsley do not need to sell followjng the £7m windfall netted by former Oakwell product John Stones’s move from Everton to Manchester City.
