Transfer gossip (Wednesday, June 22): Clarets move for Owls star; Belgian for Boro?; Dane linked to Tigers

SHEFFIELD Wednesday could face a battle to keep star centre-back Tom Lees, who is interesting Premier League new boys Burnley.

The Clarets are understood to have inquired about the defender as a possible replacement for Michael Keane, who is wanted by champions Leicester City.

The Foxes have already had one £15m bid rejected but will likely make an improved bid over the summer, leaving Burnley to consider a replacement, such as Lees.

Wednesday coach Carlos Carvalhal has been linked with the vacant managerial post at Southampton but it is not thought to be in the running.

Carvalhal is a 16-1 chance for the post, for which Manuel Pellegrini and former Monaco, Lille, Lyon and Nice boss Claude Puel are vying for favouritism.

The Owls were also linked with an audacious bid for Middlesbrough striker Jordan Rhodes but that suggestion has been rubbished by the promoted Teessiders.

Belgian full-back Thomas Meunier is the latest name to be linked with a move to Boro but Aitor Karanka’s side face competition from Napoli for the Club Brugge 24-year-old who is excelling for his country at Euro 2016.

Plenty of players continue to be linked with fellow new Premier League side Hull City, with Toulouse’s Danish international forward Martin Braithwaite attracting interest.

The 25-year-old netted 11 goals for the struggling French side last season and is also interesting Sunderland, Crystal Palace and West Ham who have already tabled a £2.5m bid.

Standard Liege defender Eyong Enoh has also been linked with a move to Hull but City face competition from Everton and Crystal Palace for the 30-year-old Cameroonian, who is a free agent.

But the Tigers will also face a battle to keep hold of their star players with Liverpool reportedly interested in left-back Andy Robertson.

Midfield duo Ahmed Elmohamady and Tom Huddlestone, meanwhile, look poised to sign new deals with Hull with contract talks having gone positively.

The Tigers are also set to sign 18-year-old AFC Wimbledon goalkeeper Will Mannion - an England Under-18s international who has also been linked with Liverpool and Stoke.

Leeds United, meanwhile, are reportedly turning to Barnsley’s Alfie Mawson in their chase for a new centre-back.

The Whites had been chasing Tommy Elphick but the former Bournemouth defender has signed for Aston Villa.

Doncaster Rovers, though, have finished their spending spree.

Rovers have brought in Mathieu Baudry, John Marquis, Ross Etheridge, Joe Wright, Matty Blair, Tommy Rowe and Gary McSheffrey and boss Darren Ferguson said: “The players that I’ve got in, I’m happy with. I’m certainly not looking at buying any more players at the moment.

“We’ll be looking at the loan market and I’m already up at 19 players without going into that.”

Doncaster defender Gary MacKenzie left the club on Tuesday for St Mirren.
