TEN-MAN York City recovered from goalkeeper Bobby Olejnik’s first-half red card to thrash Mansfield at Field Mill.
With his team 2-0 to the good, Olejnik was sent off on 31 minutes for handling outside his area following goals from Keith Lowe and Shaq Coulthirst.
But the Minstermen went on to forge further in front after the break through 10-goal top-scorer Jake Hyde and, after Matt Rhead pulled a goal back for the Stags, on-loan Tottenham striker Coulthirst completed a terrific afternoon for Russ Wilcox’s relegation-threatened outfit with his second of the game on 89 minutes.
A delighted Wilcox said: “It was a great day for York City and I am proud of the group. We’ve got a huge weekend at Easter but, if we can perform like that, we will pick up results to move us further away from trouble.”
Lowe headed in Josh Carson’s corner and Coulthirst fired past Lenny Pidgeley from 10 yards after Luke Summerfield’s through ball to put York in a commanding position after 17 minutes.
Olejnik’s dismissal for saving Rakish Bingham’s attempted lob 30 yards out of his goal could have turned the tide but Wilcox withdrew midfielder Russell Penn and kept two strikers on the pitch.
He was rewarded with both going on to claim goals – Hyde heading in from Carson’s corner on 52 minutes and Coulthirst charging through to claim his second at the death after Rhead had struck from 10 yards.
