York not facing crisis, says Mills as Kearns loan ends with Posh recall

York City manager Gary Mills insists there is no “crisis” after the club unexpectedly lost the services of Republic of Ireland Under-21 midfielder Danny Kearns.

The player has impressed in 12 games following a loan spell from Peterborough, but has been called back by the Championship club.

However, Mills, whose York side are looking for a first win in eight games when they head to Rochdale today, has plenty of options at his disposal.

“It’s disappointing as Danny has been doing well for us,” he said.

“But this is a possibility that could always happen and now it has.

“It’s a bit of a setback but we have others available.”

York have Jonathan Smith and Lee Bullock on loan at Luton and Gateshead respectively but he will not look at potentially bringing either of those back to Bootham Crescent until next week.

“We’ve got Matty Blair who can go in there, Paddy McLaughlin too and Michael Potts who hasn’t started a game this season but has been training really well.

“It’s not a crisis by any means and we have some options.”

Most importantly for York is that they get back to winning ways after a frustrating spell.

They have drawn four of their six league matches since last winning at Accrington Stanley on October 23.

The lack of wins has seen promoted York’s impressive start to life in League Two level out slightly and they have now fallen to 17th spot.

Rochdale may be in eighth place but the chasm in league positions is certainly misleading.

As Mills points out, when asked what he expects from today’s game: “It’s the same old thing.

“We’re only six points behind Rochdale.

“The difference between where they are and us is minimal.

“We’ve got to go prove ourselves and take us a bit closer to that top seven.”

Their opponents are not infallible either.

They have lost two of their last three games, against Morecambe and Southend, the latter a comprehensive 3-1 defeat a week ago, which will further encourage York as they head over to Spotland.
