BRETT MARKWELL has only recently returned to Flamborough Head GC, but quickly made himself at home again by winning the Sheffield Trophy, the club’s only 36-hole trophy.
In the morning, Gary Matthews set the pace with a net 65, which put him one in front of Ray Daykin.
Craig Goddard, Mike Russell and Michael Smith were all two shots further back while eventual winner Markwell was on 70 along with Kenny Miller and John Sumner.
The only player under par in the afternoon was Markwell, who hauled himself to the top of the field with an excellent 66, six better than the next best scores compiled by Rod Marwood, Ben Williams, Mike Russell, Matthews and Smith on 72.
Markwell’s overall winning score was an aggregate 136, just one in front of first-round leader Matthews, whose handicap falls to six as a result of his fine showing.
