A QUARTET from Waterton Park won the latest qualifying tournament for England Golf’s new Club Team Championship and led six groups into the grand final.

Glynn Andrews, his wife Karen, Tracey Parker and Simon Burgoyne scored a total of 87 points on a wet and windy day in the qualifying tournament at Fulford, York.

The other five qualifying teams are Shipley and Whitby (both 85), Willow Valley (82), Elsham (81) and Rufford (80).

They go forward to the final at Frilford Heath in Oxfordshire on Friday, August 14 where they will play off against finalists from three other qualifying events.

The tournament will be a feature of the new Golf Week festival, staged by England Golf to create a national grand finale for a host of handicap and team championships.

The new competition invited clubs to enter teams of two men and two women with combined handicaps between 50 and 96. The format is Stableford off three-quarters handicap, with the best two scores counting on each hole.

The Waterton Park group had a wide mix of handicaps: the two men both play off five, Karen is a 13-handicapper and Tracey plays off 33.

“It’s been a good day,” said Glynn, who described the weather as typically English. “This is a great golf course and a great venue. I must have played it 50 times, but it was new to the other three and they all said ‘fantastic.’

“We all four played nicely and the girls were brilliant. We’re really looking forward to the grand final and so pleased to have the opportunity to go.”

This was the second of four qualifying events. One has already been held at Stoneham in Hampshire and others will take place on the Hotchkin course at Woodhall Spa on June 21 and at Coventry Golf Club on June 28.
