Gill had two birdies and four bogeys in his opening round, but returned to level par at the halfway stage thanks to a second-round 70 that included three birdies and just one dropped shot.

He put himself in title contention on day three with a flawless 67 that included five birdies, three in his first five holes.

Third overnight, Gill eagled the second on the final day to suggest a push for the title was in the offing, but it proved his only gain to par on the day and three bogeys and a double bogey followed.

Nevertheless, it is an encouraging start to the season and saw him one of four Englishmen finish inside the top eight.

"Had an interesting week at the Portuguese amateur! Finished T7 on -2," said Gill on Twitter. "Good result overall and great experience."
