NORTHERN Counties champions Yorkshire began preparations for the defence of their crown with an overwhelming 16-2 win over Derbyshire at Scarborough North Cliff.

Darryl Berry's side surrendered only one point in each of the sessions, the morning foursomes and afternoon singles.

Steve Robins (Hull) and Shipley's Will Whiteoak went down in the first foursomes, but the remaining five pairings - Dan Brown (Bedale) and Kealan Lowe (Wheatley), Barclay Brown (Hallamshire) and Bailey Gill (Lindrick), Martin Brown (Pike Hills) and Luke Robinson (Hornsea), James Cass (Fulford) and Ben Hutchinson (Howley Hall), and Nathan Fell (Lindrick) and Jack Lampkin (Ilkley) - all won.

England A player Whiteoak set the tone for the afternoon with a 5&4 victory over Chesterfield's Darren Coop and victories followed in the next 10 matches.

Next Saturday Berry's side will take on Lincolnshire at Waltham Windmill GC, Grimsby as they continue to get ready for their first league match, with Cumbria in May.
