Yorkshire golf: English champion Dan Brown available as White Rose start title defence

ENGLISH men's amateur champion Dan Brown will spearhead Yorkshire's line-up as they start the defence of their Northern Counties League title at Ganton on Saturday against Cheshire.

Masham’s Brown will return to the scene of his national triumph last July where he became the third Yorkshireman in succession to win the crown, following on from Huddersfield’s Nick Marsh (2014) and Lindrick’s Joe Dean (2015).

The latter have both sinced turned professional, as has 2016 English stroke play champion Jamie Bower, of Meltham.

But captain Darryl Berry – who also led Yorkshire to the England county championship last summer – still has a strong and exciting line-up at his disposal.

Brown will partner England B international Will Whiteoak (Shipley) in the opening foursomes.

Yorkshire champion Ben Hutchinson and David Hague, the in-form Malton & Norton player who last week won the York Rose Bowl, will follow them.

Last year’s Yorkshire boys’ captain, Matty Raybould (Bridlington), has been paired with the experienced Luke Robinson (Hornsea).

Pairing four puts together two promising youngsters in Fulford’s James Cass and Nathan Fell (Lindrick) as does the final pairing of Hallowes’ Sam Bairstow and Rotherham’s Charlie Daughtrey.

Out fifth in the foursomes are two players with an abundance of county matches between them, Rotherham’s Jamie Harrison and Bracken Ghyll’s Jack Lampkin.
