Yorkshire golf: Hessle GC snatch another title from Hornsea GC's grasp

Hornsea GC will be sick of the sight of Hessle for on both occasions they had led going into the final event of each competition.

While Hessle managed an amazing turnaround on Wednesday at Driffield GC, coming from 14 shots back to win, both they and hosts Hull GC only trailed Hornsea by two shots at the start of play on Thursday.

The foundations for success were laid by Andy Greetham (5 handicap) and Steve Fairbank (12), who carded a 62, the best score of the day.

They received excellent backing from Trevor Hewson and Charlie Fountain (66), and professional Steve Alsop and Gary Robinson (68).

Hessle also picked up the Ted Biggs Salver for the three best scores for each club.

Greetham got his pairing off to a good start with a birdie at the first and a par at the second.

Fairbank then chipped in with three net birdies and a par in the next four holes, before handing the reins back to his partner, who played the next three holes in par.

For the next six holes they took it in turns to make their mark on the card, pencilling in three birdies, including a two from Fairbank at the 115-yard par-3 13th.

Greetham contributed consecutive pars at 16 and 17 and then Fairbank ensured they mirrored their outward 31 with the same score coming home, thanks to a net birdie at the last.
