Yorkshire golf: Huddersfield's Nick Marsh riding high after Warrington win

Former English men’s amateur champion Marsh continued his recent fine form to win by three shots with a bogey-free seven-under-par 64.

A front nine of two-under par 33 was made up of all fours and threes and included birdies at holes five and eight.

The back nine saw him accumulate five birdies – at the 10th, 12th, 13th, 15th and 17th – and four pars to be home in 31 and set the target for the day.

Mark Young (Clitheroe) placed second with a 67 and Mottram Hall’s Jamie Howarth finished third on 68.

Over 140 players took part in Halifax West End’s Ramsden Bateman and Hinchcliffe qualifiers.

In the former the leading 16 gross scores went through to the match play stages and leading the way was Steve Martin with a gross 71, closely followed by Paul Burke and Chris Ingham on 72

The Hinchcliffe, for players 14 handicap and over, saw Darrell Mitchell the top of 16 qualifiers with a two-under net 67. John Robert Clay was only one shot behind.

Les Carman and Shaun Diamond tallied 41pts and will make up one half of the team to represent Halifax West End in the regional final of the England Club Championships at Lancaster. They will be joined by two ladies who will be qualifying at a competition later in the month.

Swallow Hall’s May medal was won by John Neary with a net 64, after cont back, from Ann Lawrence. Third, a shot back, was Di Scott.

Nearest the pin on the seventh and 14th was Dave Sharp.

Catterick’s Millennium Trophy competition between the senior men and ladies, sponsored by Isobel Anderson, was won by the ladies 4-2.

Victory in the Shoppee Salver went to Cath McMahon with a net 78 after count back from Denny Shovlin. Pat Weymes was third with an 81.

Paula Hamer’s net 72 gave her victory in the Guy Trophy by an impressive seven shots from Vicky Iveson, with Anne Moore third on 81.

CD Bramall Trophy winner was Colin Hawkins (81-19-62), three ahead of Neil Cawley (76-11-65) and seven in front of Ian Doughty (74-5-69), the latter’s being the lowest gross round.

Willow Valley’s Saturday Stableford was won by new member Paul Williamson with an excellent 42pts. John Kelly finished second with an impressive return of 40.

The second class section seen Michael Burnell take the honours with 34, with the scoring partocularly admirable considering the Standard Scratch went up to 74.

Sunday brought more of a fun format with a pairs betterball blue tee stableford. The team of Jamie Coote and Stephen Carrington-Ward took first place with an impressive 44pts. Darryl Wright and Andrew Hobson finished second on 42, with Kris Charman and Jon Hinchliffe snatching third place on 40 via countback from Steve Todd and Michael Cassidy.

Hanging Heaton staged the Halifax & Huddersfield Union’s nine-hole club championship.

The hosts were the holders after winning the competition at Lightcliffe and their three-man team of Scot Minto (70), Jacob Scargill (70) and Paul Ratcliffe (77) made it two victories in successsion.

Scargill also won the individual competition on the day for the best net score with a 65 and Minto and Scargill were joint winners of the individual lowest gross competition.

Former Ghyll greenkeeper Jonny McGeachie shot a net 65 off six handicap to take the Denis Robinson Memorial Trophy, three shots ahead of Sheldan Pickles (73-5-68), who headed Division One on count back from John Blackmore (75-7-68).

Adam Rowley (83-14-69) took the Division Two prize, also on count back, from Ivan Rhodes (81-12-69), while Ian Heald (85-17-68) led Division Three.

Ghyll’s seniors have kept a clean sheet in all their matches against other clubs so far this season with home victories against Settle and Great Harwood, then beating Bracken Ghyll away as well as Green Haworth both home and away.

Bill Eccles (85-18-67) took the April senior medal from Ivan Rhodes (82-12-70) and Jack Farnell (82-11-71) in second and third place respectively before taking on all-comers to win the Ford Trophy with 84-17-67. Craig Lemon (75-8- 67) was second and Andrew Harling (72-3-69) third.

In the seniors’ championship, Keith Whittingham (82-15-67) bested the field, Keith Nash (84-15-68) placing second with the rapidly improving Dave Perry (97-28-69) third.

Graham Reeder (84-18-66) was more than happy to lose a shot from his handicap in taking the May senior medal, with Graham Whipp (83-13-68) in second place.

On the junior front, Spencer Datkiewicz returned 43pts to lift the Pennine Tools Trophy, with Matt Stevens (40) coming second ahead of Freddie Paxton (36).
