YORKSHIRE county player Jonathan Thomson was just one shot off the lead going into the final round of the Australian Master of the Amateurs Championship at Royal Melbourne’s West Course.
Lindrick’s Thomson – competing Down Under as a member of England Golf’s men’s squad – amassed 18 birdies in his opening three rounds of 69 76 68.
He had seven in his first round, five in his second – all in the outward nine – and six in the third.
Thomson, who helped Yorkshire regain the EGU Northern Counties League title last summer, showed his character by bouncing back from a second round that included both a double bogey and a triple bogey.
American Aaron Wise, the world No 8 amateur, led on 212 (67 77 68), aided by a first-day hole-in-one at the par-3 fifth.
