Wheatley had led the way at the halfway mark, but Sam Haywood and Matt Evans both carded six-under-par 65 in the afternoon to help Rotherham to a 12-shot victory over Howley Hall. Cookridge Hall placed third and Huddersfield fourth.

Ben Brewster and Steve Brennan had each come in with three-under-par 68 in the first round and, with Neil Stones shooting 74, Wheatley sat top at lunchtime.

But Brewster was nine shots higher in round two and Brennan 10, while Stones was their low man second time around with another 74.

It meant Haywood (71 65), Evans (71 65) and Jamie Harrison (73 73) were able to hoist Rotherham to the top and the title.

New Yorkshire champion Ben Hutchinson shot 67 in the afternoon and his Howley Hall team-mate Scott Hartley 68 as, together with Craig Watt (74 75), they took second spot by two from Cookridge Hall.

All four teams are in the hunt for the England Boys’ County Championship at Cumberwell Park going into the final round of matches after first-day winners Yorkshire and Hertfordshire both lost, to Northamptonshire and Wiltshire respectively.

Phil Woodcock's White Rose team trailed 2-1 in the foursomes, Hallowes' Sam Bairstow and Rotherham's Charlie Daughtrey downed by inspirational play from opponents who had a run of five consecutive birdies, followed by two eagles. It proved pivotal as the singles were shared 3-3.
