Yorkshire golf: Sheffield one win from retaining YIDU crown after sinking Halifax-Huddersfield

They defeated Halifax-Huddersfield 26-10 at Bondhay and head York – who also have five wins and a defeat in their six games to date – by a substantial match-point difference.

York won 25-11 against East Riding at Easingwold, Teesside got the better of Bradford 21-15 at Blackwell Grange, and Leeds moved off the foot of the table with a 29-7 thumping of Harrogate at Howley Hall.

Sheffield took a six-point lead from the foursomes session against Halifax-Huddersfield and never gave their visitors hope of a comeback in the singles.

New Lee Westwood Trophy holder Nick Poppleton (Wath) halved with Huddersfield’s Aron Schnacke in the top singles ahead of the next six matches all going in the hosts’ favour on the way to a 17-7 afternoon score.

Five of Sheffield’s players ended with morning and afternoon wins: Wheatley’s Ben Brewster, Worksop’s Kier Stockdale, Tankersley Park’s Lewis Hollinsworth, Rotherham’s Dominic Moon and Phoenix’s Jordan Perry.

Huddersfield’s Chris Lander and Sam Bridges (Halifax Bradley Hall) put Halifax-Huddersfield’s only foursomes win on the board.

York were unbeaten in the foursomes, returning four wins and two halved matches.

They had four players finish the day with perfect records: Pike Hills’ Alistair Smith and Oli Adamson, Malton & Norton’s David Hague and Fulford’s Damon Coulson.

Teesside featured two father-son pairings in their victory against Bradford, in Ian and Andrew Graham and Jason and Ryan Elliott. Both pairings came in with a half in the foursomes, which the hosts took 8-4 without dropping a match.

Billingham’s Brad Hildreth and Richie Donnelly had 100 per cent records on the day while Woodhall Hills’ Ben Rhodes and Harry O’Callaghan, Cleckheaton’s Martin Gaffney and Oliver Tasker, and Bradford’s James Tate returned home with singles victories for the visitors.

Leeds captain Nigel McKee had bemoaned his side’s poor record in the foursomes this campaign. His side’s response was a perfect 12-0 morning return against Harrogate.

Eight of the players went on to complete the maximum on the day: Cookridge Hall’s Adam Frontal and Tom Broxup – the latter from four holes down in his singles – Moortown’s Ben Firth, Wetherby’s Matt Pearson, Selby’s Rob Wardle, Pontefract’s Darren Walton, Wakefield’s Neil Kinghorn and Waterton Park’s Damian Simpson.

New Yorkshire champion Ben Hutchinson (Howley Hall) was all square with English men’s amateur champion Dan Brown (Masham) when he had to concede because of a shoulder problem.
