MALTON & Norton GC's Carol Simpson and Judy Butler lifted the Northern Foursomes event at Harrogate GC where Yorkshire provided all four semi-finalists.

The England Golf North competition involved 64 pairings from the six counties in the region, but by the last-four stage only White Rose competitors were left standing.

Northern Foursomes finalists Carol Simpson and Judy Butler (Malton & Norton GC) and Jayne Halliwell and Mary Pat Moore (Bingley St Ives GC) with YLCGA captain Dawn Clegg and match referee Ruth Goodwin.

Bingley St Ives GC's Jayne Helliwell and Mary Pat Moore saw off Headingley's Tracey Batty and Lesley Newton by one hole in a close encounter to claim their place in the final.

Simpson and Butler prevailed 3&1 over Rudding Park GC's Julie Parry and Sandra Taylor in the other semi-final.

Bad weather had dogged the three-day event and after 15 holes the final had to be suspended because of a thunderstorm.

Helliwell and Moore must have felt a little like they had been struck by lightning as they were dormie four down shortly before the cessation, but they won three holes in a row to take the final down the last hole.

Simpson and Butler were able to hold their nerve to halve the hole and win the title.

Despite the conditions, the competitors produced some excellent golf on a course that had seen the greens staff at Harrogate work hard to prepare it in excellent shape for the championship.
