Bond Bombshell is the star attraction on return to Beverley

THIS has already been a year to remember for Beverley racegoers '“ Prince Of Lir was a dazzling winner of Royal Ascot's Norfolk Stakes after coming to prominence when winning the Brian Yeardley Continental Two-Year-Old Trophy on the Westwood in May.

Now all eyes will be on course specialist Bond Bombshell when the popular filly, trained by David O’Meara near York, lines up in the second division of today’s Ladies Day Handicap at the ever popular East Yorkshire track.

The three year-old daughter of Monsieur Bond was bred at Little Manor Farm, Nawton, by Penelope Avison, who also owns the horse under the Trendy Ladies syndicate banner.

Avison and the 15-strong Trendy Ladies have been a staple of the Beverley summer, with their enthusiastic celebrations a regular feature in the winner’s enclosure.

Connections of Bond Bombshell are optimistic the filly can once again shine following her July 26 course success under Josh Doyle who will again be in the saddle.

“David only runs his horses if they are in good order and all the reports are that our filly is in great form,” said Avison.

“I thought she was quite businesslike in the way she won last time, and even though she’s gone up 4lb, you can never rule her out at Beverley.

“David used to train next to me at Nawton and the gallops there have an uphill shoot. I’m sure that’s really helped her run at a track like Beverley as it really built up her back-end and has got her well balanced.

“It’s always very difficult to win a race, but when it happens it’s a momentous, wonderful feeling. And even if it doesn’t happen, The Trendy Ladies are always out to enjoy ourselves – which has to be what racing is all about.

“Beverley do a wonderful job and Ladies’ Day is always a great occasion. The Trendy Ladies are probably a bit long in the tooth now to keep up with the height of fashion, but, as always, we’ll be out to have fun – win, lose or draw.”

Meanwhile, leading owners and trainers are beginning to finalise their plans for next week’s Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival at York.Highland Reel, winner of Ascot’s prestigious King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes last month, has been described as a “possible” contender for the Juddmonte International by the season’s leading trainer Aidan O’Brien.

The Ballydoyle maestro could also be represented by Sir Isaac Newton as he seeks a record sixth win in the International. O’Brien is currently the joint winning-most trainer with Sir Michael Stoute thanks to successes with Giant’s Causeway, Duke of Marmalade, Rip van Winkle, Declaration of War and Australia two years ago.

A more likely Emerald Isle raider is Ivan Grozny – the ante-post favourite is firmly on course for the Betfred Ebor on Saturday week according to trainer Willie Mullins.

This dual-purpose horse, a runaway winner over hurdles at Aintree’s Grand National meeting, runs in the colours of Andrea and Graham Wylie whose beige and black colours have become synonymous with National Hunt titans like Inglis Drever and Tidal Bay.

Leading Irish National Hunt jockey Paul Carberry has called time on his distinguished after failing to recover sufficiently from a fractured femur suffered when he fell from Rich Coast at Listowel last September.

The jockey said: “I saw my surgeon today and he advised me to stop.

“My leg’s not strong enough. I feel gutted.”

One of racing most colourful characters, Carberry’s finest hour came when partnering Bobbyjo to National glory in 1999 – and then hanging from the rafters of the old Aintree weighing room in the wake of his triumph.

It was a particularly popular triumph – Bobbyjo was trained by Carberry’s father Tommy who had won the 1975 National on L’Escargot.

Carberry’s final Grade One winner came aboard Gordon Elliott’s Don Cossack in the 2015 Punchestown Gold Cup. Eddie O’Leary of owners Gigginstown House Stud said: “The only thing you can say about Paul is he’s the ultimate horseman. He could do things very few jockeys can do and most jockeys could only dream of.”
