William Hill predict the bookmaking industry could suffer a £10m payout if Frankie Dettori wins the Derby on Wings Of Desire, winner of York’s Dante Stakes last month.
“Frankie is a showman and punters love to back him. We think ‘Frankie Fever’ could sweep the country and hit bookmakers for a £10m payout if he wins,” said Jon Ivan-Duke, a spokesman for the Leeds-based bookmaker. “It’s a wide open Derby this year, which is why we think punters will turn to Dettori. He’s a man they can trust to put in a performance on the biggest Flat racing day of the year.”
An estimated £25m will be wagered on the race across the betting industry as Dettori – and trainer John Gosden – look to win back-to-back renewals of the blue riband race following Golden Horn’s triumph 12 months ago.
Yorkshire hopes are represented by the outsider Biodynamic from the Leyburn yard of Karl Burke. He’s a first ride in the race for former jump jockey Dougie Costello.
The 237th renewal of the world famous race, there is a record prize fund of £1.5m. For the first time in her reign, the Queen is due to present the trophies to the winning connections. Her Majesty does not have a runner today, though her Carlton House was fifth to Pour Moi in 2011.
