Frankel's offspring given extended run to regain confidence

CONNECTIONS of Fair Eva are hoping the step up in trip will help the daughter of Frankel get back to winning ways in the Shadwell Rockfel Stakes at Newmarket today.

The Roger Charlton-trained filly suffered a surprise reverse when third to another Frankel offspring, Queen Kindly, in the Lowther Stakes at York last month after winning her first two races in impressive fashion.

Her victory in the Group Three Princess Margaret Stakes at Ascot in July had seen her leap to the head of the ante-post market for the Qipco 1000 Guineas.

Now after three runs at six furlongs, Fair Eva tackles another furlong as she has a second attempt at Group Two level.

“She’s come out of York in good form,” said Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager to owner Khalid Abdullah. “She’s worked well recently and she’s in good shape. We hope the step up to seven furlongs will suit her.”

Meanwhile, the aforementioned Queen Kindly, trained by Malton’s Richard Fahey, is one of six fillies declared for tomorrow’s Group One Cheveley Park Stakes.

Day one of Newmarket’s Cambridgeshire meeting saw Seamour suffer another heartbreaking defeat after being edged out by Justice Belle in a thrilling climax to the Jockey Club Rose Bowl.

Seamour looked set to provide Brian Ellison with a precious victory in the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle back in June, only to empty inside the final furlong.

It was a case of more of the same in the Mallard Stakes at Doncaster earlier this month as he once again hit the front before being caught close home.

Facing five rivals in this Listed contest, the 6-4 favourite was immediately dropped out last by George Baker, who unsurprisingly seemed keen to play his cards as late as possible.

Ellison’s charge loomed up menacingly with two furlongs to run, but the front-running Justice Belle stuck to her guns under Frankie Dettori. “He’s one of the best I’ve trained and I’ve not lost faith in him, but he needs everything to go right for him on the day,” said Malton-based Ellison.

The David Pipe-trained Moon Racer, victorious in the 2015 Champion Bumper at Cheltenham, made a winning hurdling debut at Perth under Tom Scudamore. The horse beat Ballyandy, winner of this year’s Bumper at the National Hunt Festival, in a tight finish.
