THE Breeders’ Cup Turf, one of America’s top races, has emerged as a potential target for The Grey Gatsby.

Kevin Ryan’s colt - the 2014 Yorkshire horse of the year - was a slightly disappointing sixth when defending his Irish Champion Stakes crown at Leopardstown on Irish Champions Weekend, but ground conditions were far from ideal and connections are considering stepping up to a mile and a half at Keeneland on October 31.

Adam Ryan, the North Yorkshire trainer’s son and assistant, said: “It was just the ground again (in Ireland) - the only time he’s had his ground all season was at Ascot.

“Looking at it, you’d say he’s crying out for a mile and four (furlongs) now.

“There’s the Breeders’ Cup Turf to think about, but it’s up to dad and Frank Gillespie (owner).

“He’s had a long, hard season so we’ve got to do what’s right by the horse.”

Although winless so far in 2015, The Grey Gatsby has run a number of excellent races in defeat, filling the runner-up spot in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown before finishing third in the Juddmonte International at York.
