Second period goals followed from Rob Sirianni and Jason Hewitt, before Stefan Meyer rounded off the scoring at 46.18.

It was a comfortable victory for Doug Christiansen’s team and an ideal way to warm up for Saturday night’s pivotal showdown with runaway Elite League leaders Belfast Giants, with a win vital to Steelers’ own outside hopes of landing the regular season title.

Hull Stingrays returned to the top of the Gardiner Conference after a 3-1 triumph at home to Braehead Clan stretched their winning run to five games.

Jason Silverthorn’s powerplay opener at 9.02 was cancelled out by the Clan’s Ed McGrane two minutes later.

But a second Silverthorn strike at 45.17 followed by a Guillaume Doucet effort was enough for Hull to maintain their 100 per cent record over the visitors in five meetings this season.
