Big year as Swift aims for track gold
Ben Swift is apparently playing catch up in his bid to fulfil his Olympic dream in London.
The 24-year-old, from Rotherham, anticipates this year, culminating in the London Olympics, will be his last on the boards of the velodrome, but he has been left out of the team pursuit squad for the Track World Cup.
Ed Clancy, Geraint Thomas, Peter Kennaugh and Steven Burke are set to take to the track in qualifying on today’s opening night of racing at the Olympic Velodrome, with Swift and Andy Tennant reserves for the four-man, four-kilometre team pursuit.
Swift, who is set to ride the six-event omnium this week, is determined to make the most of his remaining track time.
Swift said: “It’s gone so fast, it’s been unbelievable. It’s going to be the Olympics before we know it – I’m just trying to get there now.
“I’m full gas for the team pursuit. That’s the only thing that’s on my radar.
“This year it’s everything. It’s my main focus, my road season’s been tailored around it.
“I don’t see myself being on the track too much after the Olympics. This is my shot to go for it and my best chance of winning gold in London.”
Swift maintains all six riders are in contention for the Olympic squad.
“It’s great having Ed and Geraint there, but we’re all on a pretty level playing field,” added Swift.
“It’s not going to be easy, but I think that’s good for the team.”
