Limpright strikes when it matters for Steelers

SHEFFIELD Steelers survived a major scare after Shawn Limpright’s penalty shot goal gave them a 5-4 overtime win at home to Dundee Stars last night.

Ryan Finnerty’s team seemed to have done the hard work in overhauling a two-goal deficit to lead 3-2 early in the third period.

But they let the visitors take the lead for a second time in the match and were only saved when Tylor Michel’s 59th-minute strike took the game into overtime.

Finnerty’s team couldn’t have had a worse start when strikes from Matt Baxter and Tristan Harper gave the Stars a 2-0 lead just after three minutes.

It was a good response from the visitors, who came into the game on the back of a 9-1 home loss to Cardiff Devils on Saturday.

It wasn’t until after halfway that Steelers got themselves on the board through Colin Shields, but they were soon level when Steve Goertzen scored a powerplay goal just under a minute later at 34.31.

Jonathan Phillips gave the home side the lead at 43.23, but goals from Pat Bowen and Sami Ryhanen produced another scare for Finnerty’s men, only for Michel and then Limpright to deliver when it mattered.

The result moves Steelers up to second in the overall league table, one point behind Belfast Giants having played a game more.
