No repeat success show for Miley as she falls just outside freestyle medals
Hannah Miley narrowly failed to add to her medal tally as she finished fourth in the 800m freestyle at the World Short-Course Championships in Istanbul.
Miley had enjoyed a memorable victory on Wednesday when she withstood the challenge of Olympic champion Ye Shiwen in the 400m individual medley.
However, the 23-year-old was unable to repeat such heroics last night as she finished fourth, 0.56 seconds behind American Chloe Sutton in eight minutes 16.09 seconds.
City of Sheffield’s Eleanor Faulkner was eighth in 8mins 22.96secs.
Miley said: “I think I might have gone out a little bit harder than I expected but that is the experience of racing an 800 at such a high standard.
“I am used to doing it at district or maybe national level but to do it at international level is a whole different kettle of fish. So I am really happy with that.”
The race was won by New Zealand’s Lauren Boyle, who was under Rebecca Adlington’s championship record until the 750m mark, but finished 0.37s outside.
Second was 2008 Olympic bronze medallist Lotte Friis.
The Dane was second behind Adlington in a shoot-out at the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai and they were expected to reignite their duel at the London 2012 before being blown away by 15-year-old American Katie Ledecky as Adlington took third and Friis fifth.
Elsewhere, Georgia Davies was fifth in the 100m backstroke in a new Welsh record. The Swansea ITC swimmer was in contention, but was edged out of the medals by 0.14s in 57.32s.
Ruta Meilutyte continued her remarkable success in 2012, the 15-year-old winning the the 50m breaststroke in a new championship record of 29.44.
