Melbourne hopes ended for Edmund

TENNIS: Beverley’s Kyle Edmund was beaten in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open boys’ singles.

The 17-year-old seventh seed, who reached the US Open semi-finals in August, was beaten in Melbourne by top seed and home favourite Luke Saville in straight sets.

Saville won 7-5 7-5 and will play in this weekend’s final against unseeded Canadian Filip Peliwo.

There was better news in the junior doubles as the British pairing of Liam Broady and Joshua Ward-Hibbert won the title, defeating Adam Pavlasek (Cze) and Filip Veger (Cro) 6-3 6-2.
