Askham Bryan College appoints principal as incumbent retires after five years
THE deputy principal of Selby College, Liz Philip, has been appointed the new principal of Askham Bryan College near York.
She takes up her appointment on August 1 and succeeds Professor Gareth Rees who retires after five years in the post.
Askham Bryan College is one of the country's finest colleges with some 4,700 full and part-time students at its York campus as well as at satellite centres in Harrogate, Bedale, Guisborough, Pickering and Thirsk.
The college provides a wide range of courses – from degrees through to part-time diplomas and vocational qualifications and is currently undergoing a 5m building project to provide new student accommodation.
Mrs Philip, a farmer's daughter from Doncaster, has over 20 years' experience in the education sector, initially at Bishop Burton College in East Yorkshire and for the last two years at Selby, one of the country's leading tertiary colleges.
Her role at Selby has involved running the curriculum and the college estate, including a 26m capital project to provide new teaching and administration facilities.
Tony Grey, chairman of the Askham Byran College Corporation, said: "We are delighted that Liz has accepted the post of principal.
"She combines a thorough knowledge of further and higher education with her family background in farming. Askham Bryan has an excellent reputation, both regionally and nationally, and commitment to its agricultural heart is a fundamental part of its success.
Mrs Philip lives with her husband and two sons at Huggate on the Yorkshire Wolds where she maintains her interest in farming by keeping a small flock of Mule/Texel cross ewes.
Educated at Queen Margaret's School, Escrick, near York, she trained in agricultural business studies, gaining her degree from the University of Hull.
It was her strong interest in horses which initially led to a career in further education.
She had competed in show jumping, eventing and team chasing and served as district commissioner of the South Yorkshire-based Badsworth Pony Club.
Her equestrian knowledge was put to good use when in 1981 she joined Bishop Burton College and established the equestrian department. In due course her responsibilities increased and diversified to encompass managing the college's funding and finances.
Mrs Philip said: "I am very much looking forward to leading the team at Askham Bryan and building on the excellent work of Professor Rees promoting agricultural education across Yorkshire and the Tees
Valley."
