Celtic Crusaders 18 Hull KR 32: Two-try Newton stops Hull KR's losing streak at Crusaders

HULL KR boss Justin Morgan praised two-try hero Clint Newton as his side ended their three game losing run with victory away to Celtic Crusaders at Bridgend.

Rovers secured a third victory this season over the Welsh outfit, although the 32-18 verdict was a little tough on the Crusaders who battled hard for an hour until the visitors went up a gear.

Newton grabbed a try in each half, with his second effectively ending the Crusaders' hopes of adding another big-name scalp to those of Bradford Bulls and Wigan Warriors – the only two sides they have beaten in the debut season.

Morgan said: "Newks is an aggressive player but did not get suckered in by the opposition and came up with some really smart plays. You expect that of someone of Clint Newton's character.

"Our objective was to come here today and play nice and tight so that we can get some juice out of them and capitalise at the back end. They did well to hang in and the game was not out of their reach.

"To get three scores with 10 minutes to go, if there is a team that could do it, it is them because of their tenacious attitude that they have developed.

"I wanted to get some indicators of performances out there and I thought we got that. We ran well from dummy-half at times and our kick-pressure was good as was our line-speed of which we got a good interception try from it."

Former Hull KR back Mark Lennon kicked two first-half penalties to put the Crusaders in front before Newton and Jason Netherton went over for Hull KR tries, both converted by Michael Dobson.

Damien Quinn ran in one of the most amazing tries of the season, as the Rovers defence stood and watched him go past, while prop Ryan O'Hara squared the game up with another unconverted try.

But Newton's second plus other tries from Kris Welham, Michael Dobson and Shaun Briscoe against a Lincoln Withers consolation finished the job for Hull KR.

Crusaders coach Dixon said errors has cost his side.

"I thought the significant thing today was the penalty count which destroyed us," he said.

"The count was three-to-one and if that happens against good teams they walk around the park unopposed against you.

"If you talk about not being as good as last week (against Wigan) there are some factors such as injuries that you can throw into that. We lost Josh Hannay who has popped a shoulder and David Tangata-Toa who lasted about two minutes."
