Pork producers in line for national award
A PARTNERSHIP of Yorkshire farmers producing high-welfare outdoor pork has been nominated for a national award.
Yorkshire Outdoor has been made a finalist in the Countryside Alliance Awards, Best Local Food category.
The Countryside Alliance Awards were born of a need to support and promote rural communities, whilst praising those unsung rural heroes. The regional finalists are chosen from 600 original nominations for the awards and if Yorkshire Outdoor win this category, they will then have a shot at the national title, which is to be announced at the House of Lords Grand Final reception in March 2009.
The farmers have recently been celebrating as they have just clinched their first regional listing with ASDA, which has embraced the brand as part of its local sourcing campaign.
Mark and Grant Burton of Wilberfoss are part of the team behind Yorkshire Outdoor. Fifth-generation farmers, they've had a loyal following at farmers markets across the county for their locally-produced sausages and bacon.
Mr Burton said: 'What with our recent Asda listing and now being put forward for this award, it is an exciting time for us. I'm delighted that people recognise the need to support pork farmers in such tough markets.
"There is a real demand for fully-traceable local food, and we're delighted to supply that demand.
"It is extremely heartening to think that our customers and suppliers support and regard us highly enough to nominate us for such a high profile award."
Mark added: "We are members of the RSPCA's Freedom Food Assurance Scheme, which gives us a better product, our sausages taste better because our pigs have been free to forage and roam on a varied diet. We hope the judges enjoy our produce as much as our customers do. "
Yorkshire Outdoor recently acquired SALSA accreditation and trade from Malmo Food Park in Hull.
