The Red Tractor honour for Yorvale

A YORKSHIRE company is celebrating after becoming the first ice cream manufacturer in the North of England to gain the prestigious Red Tractor certification for the milk and cream for its ice cream.

Yorvale, based at Acaster Malbis near York, is now one of only three Red Tractor accredited ice cream makers in the country.

Membership of the Red Tractor scheme now stands at some 78,000 farmers and growers, all of whom have committed to maintaining high standards of food safety and hygiene, animal welfare and environmental protection.

Yorvale's Ian Buxton said: "Increasingly, both consumers and foodservice clients are looking for these assurances and hopefully the certification will help us to secure new business. It is particularly important given that the caterers for the 2012 Olympics will now be sourcing suppliers and the Red Tractor assurance gives us an edge over our competitors."

Yorvale uses traditional methods and milk from its herd of dairy cows, which graze on Yorkshire grass and are only milked once a day.

The news comes in the same week that a Harrogate delicatessen, Weeton's, was named as one of the best farm shops in the UK.

Weeton's received the accolade at the Butcher's Shop of the Year Awards in London where Bradford's Keelham Hall Farm Shop was also honoured.

Head judge Fred A'Court said: "Weeton's has to be one of the most stylish shops in the UK". The shop's owner Andrew Loftus said he was "very proud" to receive the award.
