York City Knights 20 Oldham Roughyeds 18: York edge it after tense finale
A pulsating game saw York claim victory in this televised encounter between second and third in Championship One with a last-minute video referee decision adding to the tension and arguably denying Oldham victory.
Two tries in three minutes gave Oldham a deserved early lead against the Knights and the Roughyeds took a four-point lead into the half-time break after a lively first 40 minutes.
Quick hands from hooker Gary Sykes and the impressive half-back James Coyle created space for Neil Roden to step off his left foot and score.
Minutes later a kick from Paul March was intercepted for Tommy Goulden to stride 40 metres and touch down, with Andy Ballard adding the extras.
Paul March made amends for his error as Paul O'Connor deflected his kick for John Oakes to pounce and score. York maintained the comeback with Paul Hughes's break seeing the ball worked wide for Dave Clayton to score in the corner.
Oldham continued to look lively as Chris Baines stepped through the defence to score but with minutes left in the first half a superb break from substitute Jordan Ross drew the full-back and Tom Haberecht touched down to reduce the half-time deficit to four points.
The second 40 minutes was played at breathtaking pace and the only try came from York's Paul Hughes as he scored a typical hooker's try between the posts after the home side had forced a repeat set on sixth tackle.
