Discipline crucial for Bulls to bounce back

Bradford Bulls coach Mick Potter is hoping his players will not have to revert to “touch-rugby” this weekend after criticising the tactics of previous opponents Catalan Dragons.

Bradford head to Castleford on Sunday searching for their first win of the season after suffering a 34-12 home reverse against Potter’s former club.

While admitting his side’s own deficiencies in that performance, he was disillusioned with the approach of Catalan.

“Their guys were up playing the ball before we had even really completed the tackle,” he said.

“There is an issue there when people just drop straight on the ground. I don’t think that’s the spirit of what the game is about.

“You’re supposed to move yourself up the field trying to break tackles rather than just drop down and play a game of touch but you know it’s only a small issue in the big picture and it didn’t change the outcome.

“We just need to be a little smarter and a little bit more disciplined with our tackle technique at Castleford.”

Someone in particular who will be seeking to improve his own discipline is promising Bradford second-row Elliott Whitehead.

He returns after serving a five-match ban for biting which was carried over from last season.

“I got knocked out about a minute and a half before the incident happened,” he insisted. “I couldn’t remember doing it.

“When I saw it on video, I just felt ashamed. I wouldn’t do it intentionally. I might throw a punch but I wouldn’t bite.”
