Shining example at Huddersfield Giants being set by developing Nathan Mason

Huddersfield Giants coach Paul Anderson says Nathan Mason is an example to their other aspiring youngsters after the prop earned a new two-year deal.

Academy product Mason, 22, has made a dozen appearances so far this term and established himself high up in Anderson’s consideration.

At six foot four inches tall and weighing 17 stone, he certainly has the frame to cause opposition problems.

He debuted for Huddersfield against Bradford Bulls in 2013 but, after spells on dual-registration in the lower leagues, has really made his mark this time around, scoring his first try for the club in Perpignan recently.

“Nathan deserves a chance here to continue his development and he is a good example for the younger lads to look up as he demonstrates a genuine development path into the Super League team,” said Anderson.

“He has come through our systems and this year really pushed his nose into consideration for the top side.

“He is a naturally big man and will probably get bigger with age and the continued benefit of training alongside the proper nutrition programme.

“Game-wise he is like many aspiring players of his age in that he needs to play regularly against good opposition.”

Mason, set to play his seventh successive game at Widnes on Sunday as Giants look to build on their Magic Weekend win over St Helens, added: “I’m lucky that senior props Eorl (Crabtree), Sam (Rapira) and Craig (Huby) have helped and encouraged me – especially this year when I’ve played far more first-grade than before.

“I know we still have lots to do as a team this year to get to where we want to be.

“But I’m glad I’ve been playing, hope that continues and our form continues to get better while I’m delighted to be staying.”
