Wakefield switch for Keinhorst hangs in the balance

WAKEFIELD Trinity Wildcats are hopeful of signing Leeds Rhinos’ youngster Luke Briscoe on a season-long loan, but a similar deal for his Headingley colleague Jimmy Keinhorst has encountered problems.

Trinity coach Richard Agar thought he had secured both players from their West Yorkshire neighbours for the 2014 season, but it is understood German international centre Keinhorst has had a late change of mind.

The 23-year-old, who played in the Challenge Cup final for Leeds two years ago, has recently signed a new contract keeping him at the West Yorkshire club until 2016.

However, given the former Super League champions’ current backline strength, he is unlikely to figure much in the forthcoming campaign and Wakefield want to add him to their ranks.

Leeds chief executive Gary Hetherington said: “I met with Jimmy and we agreed he could go to Wakefield on season-long loan.

“He was due to meet with Wakefield’s coach Richard Agar yesterday and I expected the arrangement to be completed, but it’s not been concluded yet.”

Hetherington – who maintains the duo have a long-term future at Headingley – and Agar remain keen to see both deals sealed.

Although utility back Briscoe, 19, has still to make his Super League debut, the younger brother of Leeds and England winger Tom is rated highly.

Given Wakefield have been forced to sell some of their star players to ease financial concerns, Agar is eager to strengthen with such recruits.

“We are happy with our top 17, but we need some depth and competition for places,” he said.

“We are a bit light in the three-quarters and Jimmy has got good experience and some big games under his belt.

“Leeds have an embarrassment of riches in the backs and this is an opportunity for him to play first grade and get experience.”

Agar knows Briscoe well having initially signed him for Hull FC.

The former England Academy international then joined Leeds at the end of 2011 on a three-year contract and is tipped to eventually make a big impact.

Hull FC have reversed two fixtures in order for the KC Stadium’s pitch to be relaid.

Lengthy work begins in mid-May so Hull’s game with Wakefield on June 29 has been switched to May 4, Trinity instead now hosting on that initial date.

Similarly, Hull’s home fixture with Widnes Vikings is moved from June 15 – when the Cheshire club will instead entertain Lee Radford’s side – to March 23.

Bramley Buffaloes have merged with Rodley Rockets ARLFC, but will retain their name and play at Rodley’s Canal Bank.
