Hull FC 28 Hull KR 16 - Derby defeat can't dampen belief of Robins' coach James Webster

HULL KR head coach James Webster says yesterday's derby defeat actually leaves his side in good stead insisting no team has troubled Hull FC quite as much in recent weeks.

Rovers lost 28-16 at Magic Weekend against their rivals who have now moved to the top of Super League.

However, they were leading until just before the hour mark and Webster maintains they are on the right track.

“We went into the game busted and picked up one more injury with Thomas Minns going off with concussion,” said the coach.

“But you can’t fault us for effort. No one could say we got beat on that. We got beat by a couple of good plays where we missed two tackles on a couple of powerful men who were able to carry us over the line

“But who’s run Hull FC as close as that in the last two or three months? That was probably their closest yet and the game was in the balance until the final seven or eight minutes.”

The defeat leaves Rovers in ninth, three points behind freefalling Widnes Vikings in eighth.

Asked if he thinks they can still make the top-eight, Webster said: “Of course; there’s 16 points to play for.

“There’s probably only one spot to play for – the sides from seventh onwards seem to be playing well – and there are four teams, plus Widnes chasing that eighth spot.”

Stand-off and captain Terry Campese made his return after a hamstring injury and Webster admitted: “He ran out of juice at the end. We knew that would happen, though – realistically he’s not played for 12 months – but he steers the ship and we look a better side with him in there.”

Rovers are set to lose centte Liam Salter for the season due to a shoulder injury while full-back Ben Cockayne is waiting to see a specialist about a knee issue.
