The scrum-half drew level with Liam Finn’s best of 41 consecutive goals during Sunday’s 28-14 win against Halifax.

However, Ellis then missed a relatively easy penalty to go out in front of the Wakefield Trinity player who set the rugby league record while playing for Featherstone Rovers in 2012.

“There was a bit of pressure,” admitted the ex-Hull FC star, who is thriving on a season-long loan from Huddersfield Giants.

“I’m a bit gutted really but I pulled it.

“I was trying not to think about it but I wanted to make sure it went dead and I was trying to kick it too hard into the wind.

“But then I go to the touchline and kick that one (for Kieren Moss’ try).

“Sod’s Law isn’t it? But I start again now. I’ve got two in a row - there’s 40 to go!

“And I’m still happy with levelling the record.”

The last time he had missed a kick for the unbeaten Championship leaders was five games previously at Rochdale Hornets on February 19.

Ironically, Ellis has not often been a regular goalkicker at previous clubs.

The 27-year-old said: “I’ve not been first-choice kicker but this year Tim has given me it and I’ve taken pride in it.

“I’m enjoying it and kicking okay. I hope it carries on. Tim (Sheens) told me to forget about the record and keep working hard. Sometimes you need those kicks to get you out of trouble.

“I am disappointed with my own showing - we weren’t at the races - but I’ve still got a lot in me.”

Ellis conceded the fixture against part-timers Halifax was one of their toughest yet since suffering relegation.

Sheens’ side - who have now won eight straight games - trailed 14-8 at half-time and only took the lead in the final quarter.

“We knew it would be a tough game,” he said. “Tim told us that and it was our biggest test yet. Halifax were enthusiastic, they turned up and we didn’t.

“We’re all disappointed but we’ll put it right.”
