However, the newly-promoted side from League One are indeed at the summit have enjoyed a stunning start, following up a remarkable 46-0 win over Dewsbury with a 22-14 victory at Odsal, home of former World Club champions Bradford Bulls.

“Rochdale have looked good, I can tell you that,” he said, with Rovers naming an unchanged 19-man squad.

“Their first win against Dewsbury at home was outstanding and then they toughed it out in poor conditions against Bradford last week. They thoroughly deserve to be where they are.

“They look like they’ve got a very good coach and he’s put some really nice plays into their system.

“The play with an attacking style with the ball and they look like they’ve got some good combinations going.

“Rochdale have linked up with Warrington as well so that has allowed them to do a lot of sessions against them.

“They’re a well-prepared team, they make it tough for you to play against them and they look a settled side who really know their jobs.”

Rovers go into Sunday’s match on the back of a comprehensive victory over Bradford and a narrow 28-22 win over London Broncos last week.

It is the first time the two clubs have competed in the same division since 2006, a game which Rovers hosted and won 26-12 in the old National League One competition. A year earlier, Rochdale won by four points at Spotland.
