Trio of Yorkshire amateur clubs in Challenge Cup shocks

Castleford Lock Lane will be one of five amateur clubs in the hat for the fourth round of the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup after continuing the third-round giant-killing acts.

Lock Lane were 37-22 winners over Kingstone Press League 1 club Oxford and will join Kells, Siddal, Featherstone Lions and Pilkington Recs in tomorrow’s draw alongside the 12 Championship clubs.

Lions, of National Conference Division One, stunned League One outfit South Wales Scorpions 37-20 at their Millpond ground.

“I am over the moon,” coach Jamie Rooney told the Evening Post. “When the draw was announced the town, all the players and myself were pretty excited and looking forward to it.

“I learned a lot from last year when we played York. We got a bit too excited, so this time I tried keeping them calm and ready for the game.

“From minute one we were ready for it and we took it straight to them. The first 40 minutes was the best we’ve played in the three years I’ve been at the club.”

Reece Dyas scored a hat-trick for Lions, Dean Gamble registered a try and drop goal and John Hardcastle, Kieran Redburn and Joe Fox also crossed, with Ian Jackson adding four goals.

Rooney added: “Joe Fox got man of the match, but you could have picked anybody from one to 17. It was a team effort.”

Meanwhile, Hunslet crushed League One rivals Barrow Raiders 46-12 to give Matt Bramald his first competitive win as coach, a week after a home loss to York in the iPro Sport Cup.

Richie Barnett and Jimmy Watson both bagged a brace of tries, Simon Brown touched down and kicked seven goals and Danny Ansell, Matt Carbutt and Lewis Reed completed an impressive win.

Bramald said: “I’m immensely proud of the players. We asked some pretty searching questions after last week and they answered pretty much every one.

“From one to 17 they were fantastic. Jake Normington was absolutely outstanding, he was a constant threat all afternoon, along with Mufaro Mvududu outside him.

“They could not handle them, they were so big, powerful and strong.”

Castleford outfit Lock Lane won 37-22 away to League One Oxford.

Adam Garlick ran in a brace and other try scorers were Royce Geoffrey, Nathan Fozzard, Nicky Saxton and Calum Butler.

Halifax amateurs Siddal humiliated League One visitors Newcastle Thunder with a 30-4 victory on Saturday.

Coach Gareth Greeenwood, whose older brother Lee had guided the Halifax amateurs to a 26-0 win over Doncaster’s professionals six years ago, described it as “a pretty special performance.”

Siddal were on top from the start, taking a fourth minute lead and powering into a 14-0 interval advantage with tries from forwards Tom Garratt and man of the match Byron Smith.

Smith, full-back Freddie Walker and stand off Shaun Garrod helped the hosts into a 30-0 lead before second row Dan Parker replied with three minutes left.

Gareth Blackburn and Chris Brooke kicked the home goals but the game was marred when home centre Scott Caley had to be stretchered off following an off-the-ball incident in the first half.
