Gilchrist puts seal on victory as Yarnbury eye Twickenham final

York crashed out of the RFU International Intermediate Cup after suffering a 26-18 loss away to Aspatria.

The home side raced into an early 14-0 lead with two converted tries before York hauled themselves back into it just before the break when John Dawes kicked a penalty and lock Mark Benson scored a try.

In the second half, Dawes found the target with another penalty and York started to press their opposition but they then suffered two injuries which knocked the wind from their sails. Winger Billy Cakaunitebua ran in another try for York but it wasn’t enough as Aspatria went on to score two more.

Yarnbury are now just one game away from Twickenham after coming through a tough test to beat Ormskirk 31-0 in the RFU Senior Vase quarter final.

It was their centre Jason Avison who broke through the defence first with Carl Paterson converting. Then, 20 minutes later, Lee Mortimer crashed over out wide to increase the lead. Ian Maycock knocked off three forwards to add another shortly after.

With Paterson injured, his replacement Jarred Huss placed a fine kick between the posts, making it 19-0 at the break. Yarnbury defended stoutly in the second half with the wind making it tricky for them to break forward. But Ellis Gommersall managed to set the ball down from a breakaway and Huss added a fantastic conversion, kicking into the wind from out wide.

Tom Gilchrist wrapped up the win late on with a catch and drive try. They will face Stewarts and Lloyds from Northampton in the semis.

Tries from second row James Chantry and full-back Chris Ward helped Goole beat Birchfield 13-0 and reach the semi finals of the RFU Junior Vase. A penalty from scrum-half Rhys Moore helped secure the win, although the performance and decision-making left something to be desired and Goole will have some work to do if they are to reach the final at Twickenham.

Hullensians ran in five tries on their way to a 29-19 victory at Old Rishworthians in Yorkshire Two.

Flankers Jon Burrell and Kevin Bates touched down, as did lock Luke Coughlan, hooker Neil O’Donnell and winger Jack Snowdon, who also kicked two conversions. For Rishworthians Nick Faulkner, Kurt Sutcliffe and Anthony Shoesmith scored tries and Joe Billing kicked two conversions.

Ripon beat Leodiensian 43-10 with a six-try performance.

Full-back Ashley Rio scored two of their tries and kicked five conversions and a penalty. Rob Harrison scored two tries, while Joe Rowntree and Adam Scott-Paul also crossed.
