Leeds sign Welsh fly-half Thomas

LEEDS Carnegie have signed fly-half Ceiron Thomas from Llanelli Scarlets.

The 25-year-old, who can also play at full-back, will be the first-choice No 10 for the Premiership newcomers, following Alberto di Bernardo's departure to Bourgoin.

Thomas, who scored 288 points in 71 appearances for the Scarlets, said: "I am looking forward to trying to help Leeds consolidate their position in the top division."

Thomas began pre-season training with Leeds Carnegie yesterday after leaving his home town club to move to Yorkshire.

He can also play at full-back and has been understudy to British and Irish Lions star Stephen Jones at Stradey Park since making his debut back in 2003.

He added: "I am really excited about the challenge of coming to a new club and a new competition.

"I hope that coming out of my comfort zone at the Scarlets will help me move onto the next level in my career. I can't wait to get started now.

"I was very impressed with the coaching staff of Andy Key and Neil Back when I spoke to them and I knew that Leeds Carnegie was the right club for me when I heard their vision for the team and the club for the coming years.

Rugby director Andy Key said: "We are really pleased to have signed Ceiron and he will add a lot to our squad.

"He has experience of playing in the Magners League and the Heineken Cup and that will be vital for us in the season.

"We also have Jason Strange as a specialist senior fly-half in the squad so the competition between them both will really add to our options.

"It was a big move for Ceiron to leave his home town club, and the only team he has ever played for, and we are delighted that he chose Leeds Carnegie as his new home."
