Mike MacDonald handed captaincy

AMERICAN international Mike MacDonald, 27, was today appointed as captain of Leeds Carnegie for their forthcoming 2008-09 National One season.

The club's longest serving player Rob Rawlinson, was also revealed as club captain.

MacDonald, who last year was named Leeds Carnegie's player of the season, has made 50 appearances for the team since he joined from Worcester Warriors in 2006 and takes over as captain from Stuart Hooper, who left the club at the end of the season.

The Californian born prop is the side's most capped player, having represented USA Eagles on 50 occasions.

MacDonald said: "Any time you captain a side it means a lot to you, so it will be a great honour to captain Leeds Carnegie during this forthcoming season.

"To take over from Stuart Hooper, who did a fantastic job for the club, is a privilege and I am looking forward to the challenge of this new role."

Director of rugby Andy Key said: "Mike's international career is impressive, he's played at the highest level of the game and his experience will hold him in good stead for the role of captain.

"As a player he is well respected by his peers and I know he is looking forward to the challenge the season brings, as are the rest of the players."
