National 2 North: Ionians duo go in at double as Hull pull away to claim bonus over Otley

HULL Ionians ran in eight tries on their way to a 53-0 drubbing of hosts Leicester Lions as their promotion push continued to gather pace.

Scrum-half Isaac Green kicked an early penalty, and then added the conversions following tries from second-row Joe Makin and winger Sam Wilson.

Wilson’s second try was also converted as Ionians opened a 24-0 lead at half-time and, after the break, winger Stephen Slingsby and prop Stephen Johnson crashed over.

Centre Joel Gill struck just before the hour mark, and Makin’s second followed on 64 minutes, Green adding the conversion as he did following a 78th- minute try from replacement Adam Thomas.

Hull beat Otley 30-18, scoring four tries to secure an important bonus point.

Otley opened the scoring through Harry Hudson before Jamie Foster responded.

The sides then traded points throughout the first half with Hudson bagging his brace and Steve Hihetah and Paul Sewell crashing over for Hull.

They pulled away in the second half with two penalties from Jamie Foster and Phil Eggleshaw’s try.

Huddersfield had to come from behind to beat bottom club Stockport 26-11.

The visitors came out of the traps at speed and scored a try and two penalties in the first half-hour.

Huddersfield got a response before the interval when full-back Tom Hodson went over to reduce the gap to six points.

The first score after the break was vital and Huddersfield claimed it after two minutes, Tom Owen crossing and Joel Hinchliffe landing the goal.

Winger Elliott Knight added a third try and flanker Ben Hoyle wrapped up the bonus point, Hinchliffe converting both.

Harrogate scored five tries to four but still lost 35-34 at home to Birmingham & Solihull, who scored the winning try in stoppage time.

James Morland supported Lewis Minikin’s break to score the opener but Rob Connolly crossed and Adam Canning converted before winger David Evans scored another converted try.

Canning kicked a penalty but Cam Leadley scored in the corner and Joe Rowntree converted before Harrogate took the lead as Morland’s pace took him through.

Canning struck a drop goal and a penalty before setting up Johns for a converted try.

Rowntree kicked a penalty and Willem Enslin scored a converted try, while Bottomley crossed to make it 34-30 after the sin-binning of Johns.

Then, in stoppage time, a Harrogate clearance kick was charged down and Evans scored the crucial try.
