Wilson puts Otley to the sword as Lewis fumes over indiscipline

Samuel Wilson scored a brace of tries for Hull Ionians in a dominant display which saw them beat Otley 32-3.

It took Ionians 18 minutes to get off the mark with Isaac Green kicking the first of his two successful penalties of the game. But the first try of the contect wasn’t far behind with Wilson opening his account on 23 minutes. Green converted.

Otley hit back with a penalty of their own just before the break, Stephen Depledge the only name on their score sheet. But after the restart, it was all Ionians as David Laverick, Wilson and Daniel Hague all went on to score tries.

Hull’s forwards were on the back foot all day and suffered a 32-0 trouncing on their visit to Chester.

Both sides had won one of their previous two league matches but, while both teams suffered from suspect handling, on the day Chester were far superior in the loose and in the lineouts.

They went ahead after 10 minutes with a try by scrum-half Matt Walsh, converted by Will Goodwin, and a try by winger Peter Rees late in the first half saw them turn round 12-0 ahead.

Walsh scored again and Chester secured a bonus when flanker Will Bown crashed over midway through the half. They sealed their win with a catch and drive try by No 8 Guy Ford.

Huddersfield head coach Gareth Lewis was left fuming after his side threw away a lead at Luctonians through lack of discipline.

The visitors led 23-17 going into the final quarter before two successive sin-binnings resulted in two tries for the opposition who won 29-23. Huddersfield were 5-0 up in five minutes with a try by lock Austen Thompson. Luctonians came back to lead 10-5 but two penalties by Joel Hinchliffe put Huddersfield back ahead.

Winger Malcolm Clark touched down out wide just before the break, only for Luctonians to score a converted try.

More tenacity after half-time saw the visitors re-take the lead through scrum-half Dan Jeffry and fly-half Hinchliffe’s conversion. However, when Thompson and full-back Michael Crossgrove were sin-binned within minutes of each other, Luctonians came back with two tries and a conversion to restrict Huddersfield to only one point for their efforts.

Irvine and Richard Vasey traded penalties before Stuart Cross scored a trademark Caldy catch-and-drive try. Ben Eaves intercepted a pass to race clear and give Caldy the lead, which with the conversion, stood at 15-8.

A series of driving mauls first enabled Jake Brady to crash over and then Noel Minikin before the defence stood firm.
