The event starts with 128 players in a flat draw, each needing to win seven matches to capture the title and a top prize of £170,000. Mark Selby took the crown last year by beating Ronnie O’Sullivan 10-7 in an astonishing final which featured six centuries and ten more breaks over 50.

Other winners in recent years include O’Sullivan, Neil Robertson, Judd Trump, John Higgins, Ding Junhui and Shaun Murphy. A field packed with snooker’s top stars is once again expected this year.

Tickets for earlier rounds are still available and start at just £7, but must be booked fast as other sessions will sell out. The first round is played over three days from November 28 to 30, before the BBC television coverage starts. With all 128 players in action overt those three days it’s a chance for fans to see many of the best potters on the planet.

A spokesman for World Snooker said: “Once again we are on course for record ticket sales and we’re thrilled to find that the enthusiasm for snooker of the fans in Yorkshire shows no signs of abating. We’re seeing a quality of play on the tables now which has never been witnessed before, and that was evident in last year’s final. The Betway UK Championship is one of the events which every top player is determined to win and they will all be making sure they arrive in York in peak form.
