The 36-year-old former world No 1 produced a stunning start to his match with the world’s current leading player, Mohamed ElShorbagy, but couldn’t sustain the level of performance.

The Egyptian hit back in style, eventually winning 8-11, 9-11, 11-9, 11-4, 11-9 after a gruelling 83 minutes on court.

In the other semi-final, Matthew’s fellow Englishman, Daryl Selby also took a lead, but again couldn’t capitalise as he fell to a 14-16, 11-6, 11-2, 11-5 defeat.
