YORKSHIRE’S Nick Matthew and James Willstrop secured safe passage into the quarter-finals of the Windy City Open in Chicago last night.
Top seed and world No 1 Matthew, from Sheffield, saw off the threat from the Neteherlands’s Laurens Jan Anjema, prevailing 11-7,11-7,11-9.
Willstrop seeded five, was also off court fairly quickly, beating former world No 1 Amr Shabana 11-4,11-8,11-1.
Matthew will now meet fellow Englishman Peter Barker in today’s last eight encounter.
“I’m pleased to get off 3-0 today,” said Matthew afterwards.
“I still have things to work on and to go further I need to be a little more clinical.”
Willstrop was also happy to get off court without being dragged into a long, drawn-out affair.
“The scoreline doesn’t reflect the match as I had to put in a lot of effort,” he said.
“It wasn’t flashy squash, but I hit all the right areas.”
The 30-year-old, from Pontefract, will now face Egypt’s Ramy Ashour later today.
