While the Leeds club were recording a clean sweep in East Yorkshire, the leaders were made to battle all the way for their 16-10 triumph at fourth-placed Queens.

For Hull and ER, only world No 25 Fi Moverley got on the scoresheet in her 3-2 loss to Stuart MacGregor. Otherwise, Mark Fuller, Owain Taylor, Declan Christie and Cameron Ward cruised home against Harry Falconer, Yusef Forster, Paul Norton and James Crowther in straight games.

It was a different story in Halifax, though, where Pontefract were grateful to their top three for victory, New Zealander Evan Williams edging out European junior champion Patrick Rooney 3-2, Taminder Gata Aura also squeezing home against Matt Sidaway and Neil Cordell beating James Earles 3-0.

Connor Sheen’s and national senior coach David Campion’s 3-1 successes against Alex Hodgetts and Lewis Doughty kept the result in doubt until the end.

Dunnington, who are third on 111 points, also closed the gap on Pontefract this week, to 37 points, and they have two matches in hand on the leaders.

A strong line-up headed by world No 20 Chris Simpson eased to a 19-6 victory at Pontefract 2nds, for whom Matt Godson was a consolation 3-2 winner against Matt Stephenson at number five.

Elsewhere, Simpson, Gareth Lumsdon and Michael Andrews were 3-1 conquerors of Adam Taylor, Chris Gillespie and Elliot Ridge, while Julian Tomlinson overpowered Sam Wileman in straight games.

Meanwhile, defending champions Barnsley bounced back from a hat-trick of defeats in style with a 20-1 drubbing of rock-bottom Abbeydale seconds.

World No 41 Declan James, Chris Fuller, Miles Jenkins, Canadian Hollie Naughton and Phil Bowker condemned the Sheffield outfit to an eighth loss in eight matches by overcoming Matthew Broadberry, Phil Scully, Sam Watts, Nick King and James Biggin, with only Biggin troubling the scorers.

In the night’s other match Hallamshire notched their fourth win in a row with a 19-4 success at Abbeydale in the Sheffield derby.

Straight-games victories by Ashley Davies, Nick Wall and Alex Cutts over Oli Turner, Guhan Sethikumar and Oscar Beach - allied to a 3-1 win for Dan Lawrence over Murray Scott - clinched the visitors’ victory and rendered Charlie Wall’s 3-2 triumph against Paul Jegede-Brimson in vain.
