Yorkshire CCC 2016: One-day success also vital, says Jason Gillespie

YORKSHIRE are not just gunning for a hat-trick of County Championship titles this summer.

They are also striving for a significant improvement in white-ball cricket.

Yorkshire have not won a domestic one-day tournament since 2002, when they lifted the old Cheltenham and Gloucester Trophy, and they want to make headway in the Royal London Cup and T20 Blast.

Although the club reached the Royal London semi-finals last year, which represented a decent effort, their T20 form was again poor and remains something they are especially determined to improve.

It was the main reason, in fact, why they were keen to allow first-team coach Jason Gillespie to expand his coaching horizons during the winter by taking charge of Big Bash franchise Adelaide Strikers.

Gillespie led an unfancied Strikers to the semi-finals and has returned to Yorkshire with plenty of useful learnings which will, hopefully, help the club impact in the game’s shortest form.

“It was a really positive experience,” said Gillespie, who will coach the Strikers again this winter.

“I found the whole experience a lot of fun and worked with some fantastic people.

“One of the big things I learnt from it is that the players really back themselves in the Big Bash.

“There’s no fear of failure, and for me it’s all about being crystal clear in what you’re trying to do.

“We’re well on the way to getting to that stage here at Yorkshire, and adaptability is very important.

“What we want is adaptable cricketers as opposed to adaptive cricketers.

“You want players to adapt to all situations, and I think we can certainly be a lot better at that.

“Conditions are obviously a lot different in Australia than they are in England, but we’ve worked hard on one-day cricket in training during the winter, and in addition to doing well in the Championship, we’re keen to do well in the one-day comps.”
